We open every day at 11 am, serving lunch and dinner. Our executive chef of County Tyrone, Ireland emphasizes traditional Irish fare along with American pub classics.

The Market Tavern is an authentic Irish pub nestled in the heart of University City on 30th and Market Street in Philadelphia. Known for our Irish hospitality and lively atmosphere, our family has served Philadelphians, travelers, and the University City community across the street from 30th Street Station for over 40 years.

Our family’s Irish history coupled with the pub’s Market Street address inspired the tavern’s new name. While our former name Sláinte (English: Cheers, health) embodied the spirit of the bar, we felt we could further connect our family’s Irish heritage to our Philadelphia home under “The Market Tavern.”

Our family’s patriarch spent much of his childhood in the Market Square of Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland. Historically the town was a merchandise hub in the county, home to a distillery that at its height, annually produced more than 20,000 of gallons of whiskey. The town also had a brewery, a tannery, and of course, a centralized MARKET.

Today, Castlerea continues to act as a thriving market town that houses an active livestock mart. The mart is a focal point for the agricultural community of the area, and the “Market Square” remains the center of town, just as it was the center of our family’s community.

Here in Philadelphia, The Market Tavern serves the same purpose. We welcome daily commuters from near and far and remain a staple of our University City neighbors. We are at the center of Philadelphia business, culture, and life.

The Market Tavern honors our family’s past, embraces its new Philadelphia roots, and holds tribute to the memory of a beloved friend and devoted family man.
